This area is a mine, filled with hidden jewels, with so many things to do, you can make your holiday filled with many of the activities this beautiful area has to offer, or you can just sit back and enjoy the relaxed wide open spaces of the Beach, watching the waves crash onto the shore, strolling the vast 10kms of open beach or just sitting on the beach and reading a good book.

Bowentown Heads. |
The view is nothing short of wonder! With Mayor Island, or Tuhua as it is known by local Maori, being one of the dominate features on the horizon, and the Pacific Ocean providing an abundance of marine life, Waihi Beach is definitely a slice of paradise. With expanse views of the coast from the Coromandel Peninsula through to Mount Maunganui, Waihi Beach is a must see and stay place! |
| You can charter a private boat out to the Island, take a picnic lunch and spend the day trekking the fantastic walks, viewing both the native bush, coast lines and the beautiful lakes that this Sacred Island has to offer you. Tuhua Marine Reserve was established in 1993 to protect marine organisms and their habitats for present and future generations. Approximated. 3 square nautical miles at the northern end of Mayor Island and extends from mean high water springs mark to one nautical mile offshore. Taking in over 5 km's of coastline from Tumutu Point east to Turanganui Point. Boating, swimming, diving, and snorkeling are all encouraged within the reserve, however fishing, or removing or disturbing of marine life is strictly prohibited within the reserve. There are other areas for you to take in a spot of deep sea fishing on your way there or back if you wish too, or organize with the charter boat, to take you diving on the number of reefs in the area... |
| Whilst on land, You could take a drive to the ancient Pa sites of Bowentown Heads, the land that divides the Ocean and the safe inner harbor. Walk up to the summit of this important Pa and you will see why it was used for gardening and established strongholds for many Maori generations. With Magnificent 180 degree views of the surrounding areas, it's well worth the hike up the little hill! Now a public reserve, Bowentown Domain offers walks, picnic sites, plenty of parking, a boat ramp and places to explore. Anzac Bay nestled on the harbor side of Bowentown Heads, is a very safe place for the family to swim and play. While on the Ocean Side, Cave Bay is popular for rock fishing. |
 |
| You could go north towards the Surf Club end of the beach, here you'll find the surf side of Waihi Beach. There are also some fantastic short walks for you to embark on if you feel like stretching the legs! Orokawa Bay is a scenic jewel in the Bay of Plenty, with the ancient Pohutukawas and white sand. Both the bay and it's domain are designated scenic reserve and comprises of 145 hectares of Native bush, including the giant Kauri amongst it! Feel like more tougher challenge walking then continue from Orokawa Bay 1.5km into the bush, about 90 min's and you will come to William Wright Falls, 28 metres of sheer rock face dropping into 2 stages to the valley floor. |
 |
Want to make a day of it, got a packed lunch, plenty of water, good strong hiking boots, then perhaps continue back towards the coast along to Homunga Bay. Another hidden Jewel in the Bay of Plenty's crown. This Bay is reasonably tough going and provides challenges for those of us, who like climbing steep hills and scrambling over rocky cliffs! The scenery is nothing short of spectacular and like Orokawa Bay it has a dense Pohutukawa Forest. |
Perhaps you wish to go in the opposite direction, a visit to Waihi, view the Open Pit of the Goldmine that is still being used today, wonder around the village, go up to the Art Market and view many of the fine works of art for sale by local artists.
Further inland will take you to the spectacular Karangahake Gorge. Here you will find, that not only is the scenery breath-taking but the hills are steep in both physical form and in Gold mining history. There are many beautiful walks for you to embark on if you wish, or just relax and enjoy the little cafes and winery that are in the Karangahake village.
To make it a more enjoyable day out, take the historic train from Waihi to Waikino, and explore this quaint sleepy village, enjoy great food at the Train Station Cafe and return back to Waihi before heading back out to the beach. If your feeling like more exercise, take the train to Waikino, do the walk from Waikino to the Karangahake village, enjoy a cafe lunch, then return to Waikino before the train departs and pick up your car from the train station in Waihi to return to the beach for a divine meal in one of the many restaurants/cafes that offer fine dining in this area!
Perhaps you would like to check out some of the impressive Murals that have been created over the years in the town named KatiKati, 10mins south from the beach.
Or do a day trip over to Rotorua...The choices are endless!
